Chapter Sixteen

Sia

I’d been hiding in my room for the past hour, curled up in a ball on the bed. New shadow powers. Incredibly hot make-outs with Chase. Hurting Cass. Almost ripping Aric’s hands off with shadow tentacles. It had been a wild ride of an afternoon, and a lot more than I was emotionally ready for.

I had to apologize to Cass. I had to make things right with him. He was too nice a guy. He’d been nothing but sweet and welcoming to me, and it killed me to think that what Chase and I had done hurt him somehow. My stomach braided itself into new and interesting kinds of knots. I’d never had to apologize for breaking someone’s heart before, especially not to someone I also had feelings for, and why is all of this so complicated anyway? Argh! Chase said that dragons were more relaxed about these things. I guess some dragons are more relaxed about them than others.

I sat up on the lush four-poster bed and looked over at the dressing area near the walk-in closet. A three-paned mirror showed me exactly how I looked. Ugh. My hair was falling out of my ponytail. My face was paler than usual, making me look sickly. Maybe if I looked pathetic enough, he’d forgive me faster.

I walked over and picked up a hairbrush from the marble-topped vanity. I pulled out my ponytail holder and gave my long black hair a few strokes. Might as well not look like a total scrub. I looked over myself in the mirror again. There were flecks of tree bark on my shirt. I flushed as I remembered Chase pinning me against the tree. My nipples hardened at the memory. I scowled at myself in the mirror and whipped the shirt off. It smelled like Chase. Nice, but probably not what I want to wear to apologize.

I reached down beside the vanity and fumbled with my backpack. The familiar, worn purple fabric was soothing under my fingertips. It was a gift, and carried my most treasured things in it. It also had my wardrobe from home. I pulled out a clean t-shirt, this one black with a line drawing of an origami crane in white. It was the best I had with me. Honestly, it was probably the best I had, period. I’m not one to go out much.

I opened the door and heard unfamiliar voices downstairs. Over the course of the week, I’d met and talked with all the staff. These voices were cooler, more aristocratic. More like Aric. I still had conflicted feelings about what had happened with him. On the one hand, I was horrified that I’d lashed out with my powers like that. On the other, he’d totally deserved it.

Cautiously, I crept down the stairs. There were two older people in the atrium, probably around Kitty’s age, probably Aric’s parents. Both had the same platinum hair, the same ice blue eyes, and the same look of superiority about them. I flattened myself against the wall and willed myself invisible.
